This blog is the place where we show our story. The place where we explain the what, the why and the how. We will talk about our ideas, show early designs and explain the decisions that we take: an inside tour of Coda. However, this is not a one way street.
We want to hear from you.
We want to involve you in the process. That is why, over time, we will ask you for your opinion, ideas and feedback. As such, this blog is a place for dialogue. A dialogue that will help us on our mission to create earnest value. So let us therefore introduce ourselves in this post. After all, who talks to someone they don’t know…
We are two brothers and a cousin with very different personalities but similar interests. Obviously, we like watches quite a bit. Aside from this understatement we have a common belief that our time is the most valuable thing that we own. Therefore, instead of selling it to some corporation, we want to use it to build something of our own.
So we did…
We first built a workshop. To be fair, workshop might be overselling it slightly. We built a small house in the back of our parents’ garden and filled it up with a couch, a desk and a piano that we renovated to function as a desk. It is in this place (lovingly named our Watch House) that we came up with the idea, made the first sketches and produced the first designs. It is here that Coda was born out of our mutual ambition and passion for watches.
“Fil Huiberts is the name, the cousin. Business management major with a minor in Entrepreneurship, and a project aficionado. Aside from being a fulltime student, I am a classical pianist and play a lot of boogie-woogie lately – really like it. I am also a movie enthusiast, especially the oscar-winning drama kind of movie, or an action movie with an actual solid story… These are sadly rare though. Coda is my first startup and I love the thought of pure independence that it brings me, while conquering problems on a day to day basis and actually promoting doing something good: giving time.”
I am one of the Maas brothers. My name is Thijs and I have a strong entrepreneurial mindset. At the moment, I am doing a Masters degree in international business law at Tilburg University. Although I like law, I came to realize that I would rather build something of my own than work for some random big corporate suit. Therefore, I am very excited to be working on Coda. Pianist through and through, I very much enjoy laying down some quatre-mains boogie-woogies with my cousin. Also, I like steak.
“I am Bert Maas; the second Maas brother (I am the older, wiser one that tries to keep Thijs in check). I received my Industrial Design Bachelor’s degree at the Technological University Eindhoven in 2015 and currently I am in my graduation year of the Master’s degree. In design my main interests are lighting design, interaction design and above all product character design. My main belief is that design should be long-lasting and should make observer, user and owner feel something. I believe in simplicity in design and in life. Needless to say I was very excited about working with the guys to design a watch that embodies such strong values. In my free time I love to create and build things (technically that is still design isn’t it?), which also explains my love for drone racing.”
Together, the three of us are the main team at Coda. As we are all related, we are not afraid to let our strong personalities and opinions collide quite spectacularly now and then. However, this always leads to good decisions and effective teamwork in the end. After all, we are a family at Coda (quite literally indeed) and together we are working hard to make our dreams reality. On this blog you can follow our progress, get insights and voice your opinion. We hope you will choose to do exactly this and support us on our road to create something meaningful. Something that is actually worth giving. Something timeless.
